Welcome to Introduction to Public Health Course (formerly called Community Health 1).
Public Health, “…the
science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health
through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations,
public and private communities, and individuals.” With its mission to
promote and protect health and prevent disease, Public Health can help solve many of these
difficult health problems plaguing individuals, populations and societies.
Introduction to Public Health course promises to take you on a
journey through the multidisciplinary science and art behind diverse public
health issues, concepts, and practice in a global context and local by
examining the definition, philosophy, purpose, functions, organization, tools,
strategies and results of public health in various settings. Some of the
issues covered include, after an introduction to the population-based field
with its underlying science basis, include human rights and health, population
growth, environmental health, injuries and occupational health and maternal and
child health. Furthermore, the course will give you an overview
of this field to help you think about and explore how you can apply it to contribute
to public health’s mission for your community and for Papua New Guinea, through
your public health careers as well as being knowledgeable, engaged members of society. Local, regional and international examples
will enable you to apply your knowledge to real-world PNG health issues at your workplace
through understanding how public health strategies can contribute
to health improvement.
